At Any Cost, by Mike and Haley Jones

Recommended for 16 years old and up!  Book review by Rebecca Walter.

Both Mike and Hayley had thought of Africa as young teenagers (before they had ever met each other). Hayley dreamed of being a missionary in Africa. And Mike always thought someday he would adopt a boy from Africa.

They share in their book how they met, and what God did in their lives through some early marriage struggles, which at the time, looked hopeless. In this book you’ll hear the story of Hayley’s first pregnancy with it’s many complications that put her and the baby at risk.  And you’ll also read how they came to adopting their “sweet eight” as they call them!

After reading this book it makes me want to meet the children! It’s a powerful message on God’s perfect timing in every detail of our lives!

In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, by Mark Batterson

Recommended for 13 years old and up!  Book review by Faith Walker.

Mark Batterson starts…”When I was nineteen years old, I heard a sermon about a man named Benaiah, who chased a lion into a pit on a snowy day and killed it. I could hardly believe it was in the Bible.” (from page 9). Those two lines should grab your attention in themselves. Who wouldn’t like to read about THAT story?!

We’ve all had times (or will have in the future!) where it feels like we are facing a lion. A challenge that is bigger than us. Something that takes our breath away and we’re just not sure if we will make it out of the pit alive. This book tackles fear and talks about living victoriously. It is all about thriving versus surviving. It’s about taking life by the mane and being a lion chaser.

God didn’t make us to float through life or just exist. He placed us here purposefully and intentionally for a specific plan: to glorify Him. The thing is: that takes guts. It takes faith and courage to live purposefully. And it just might mean chasing a lion sometime in your life. Probably a few. That will require you to take some risks.

In this powerfully poignant book, you will read real stories, insight from the Word, and your heart will be redirected to follow Jesus FULLY. “I believe that God created us to chase lions, but too often that chase ends in miscarriage or misdirection. We stop chasing. Or we chase the wrong things that lead us down the wrong path…Maybe it is time to seize God-ordained opportunities. Maybe it is time to unleash the lion chaser within. Chase the lion! It’s what you are destined to do.” (from page 175)

Speak Love, by Annie F. Downs

Recommended for 12 years old and up!  Book review by Rebecca Walter.

WORDS. ARE. POWERFUL. I think it’s safe to say in one time or another in our lives we’ve all been built up by words, or sadly, torn apart by the words others have said to us. Out words have so much power, yet we throw them around without even giving thought to the true impact they are having on those around us. Right? Right! But it does not have to be that way, girls! We want to be girls who speak love! We want others to feel accepted, priceless, beautiful and highly valued like daughters of God! We are to use our words for good instead of making others feel worthless, abandon, ugly and unloved.

“Annie is an author and speaker based in Nashville, Tennessee. Flawed but funny, she uses her writing to highlight the everyday goodness of a really and present God. By weaving together personal stories, humor, and Scripture, she invites young women to experience fulfilled lives with a God who made them on purpose and loves them deeply.” (from back cover of book…and truly her funny side comes out in this book I love her style of writing).

When you speak LOVE you speak LIFE and that’s what matters!

Why God Calls Us to Dangerous Places, by Kate McCord

Recommended for 12 years old and up!  Book review by Rebecca Walter.

“Kate McCord worked in Afghanistan for nearly a decade after the fall of the Taliban as a humanitarian aid worker. After evacuating Afghanistan, she transitioned into a mentoring and consulting role to other workers serving in the region. Currently, Kate serves Christ through writing, speaking and mentoring, and conducting workshops and seminars. Weaving together scripture, her story, and the testimonies of others, Kate explores what is lost and what is gained when we follow God at any cost. She writes for those who go and those who love them, since love shares in suffering.”  (from back cover of book)

“Why does God call us to dangerous places? Because we can’t touch people, heal their bodies, hand them a book, or worship and pray with them from 7,400 miles away. Love and truth takes on flesh and walks the earth, and HE does so with us. We who go, fragile, stumbling human beings, each recognized an invitation to walk with Christ in a dangerous place and responded, trusting the One leading us.” (from page 102 of book)

“There is an invitation to humility in walking with Christ in a dangerous place. We are not the saviors. We are flesh and blood human beings called to be His presence, to love people He loves and to share His stories with them.” (from page 172 of book)

All IN, by Mark Batterson and Parker Batterson

Recommended for 12 years old and up!  Book review by Rebecca Walter.

“We want everything God has to offer without giving anything up. We want to keep sinning, but get the cool miracles and God’s favor on the side. And then we get mad at God when He doesn’t deliver. What!? We’re afraid that if we commit to God, we’ll miss out on what this life has to offer. Lie! It’s the same lie the serpent told Adam and Eve in the garden. God’s not holding out on you. You can take Psalm 84:11 to the bank: No good thing does God withhold from those who walk uprightly. If you don’t hold out on God, I can promise you this: God will not hold out on you. But it’s all or nothing. It’s all of you for all of Him.” (from page 23 of book)

“It’s time to go all in by going all out. The phrase “all out” simply means giving God 100%. It’s giving God everything you’ve got. It’s all about loving God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. It’s not just worshiping God with words during a nice emotional worship session, it’s worshiping God with blood, sweat, and tears. You can’t be the hands and feet of Jesus if you’re sitting on your butt. Church isn’t a spectator sport. Church isn’t even a building with an address. Church isn’t a gathering at a certain time. If you are the Church, then “Church” is happening whenever and wherever you are.

Your school is your mission field.

Your life is your sermon.

Your friends are your congregation.” (from page 72 of book)

I really love this book because of the many real life stories that are shared in it about all the amazing things God did in lives of people who chose to go All in and All out for Him! It’s full of unique illustrations, unforgettable stories, and compelling accounts of biblical characters. They write the book in a very easy read type way…even though it’s a “to the point” kind of book it’s written in a fun way! It’s hard to put it down when you start reading!

“Half way is no way to live! Quit holding back. Quit holding out. It’s time to go all in and all out for God.” (from back cover of book)

The Fitting Room, by Kelly Minter

Recommended for 13 years old and up!  Book review by Rebecca Walter.

“Therefore, as God’s Chosen People, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” Colossians 3:12 (from page 16 of book)
If your like me, you look at the list of clothes we are to wear as God’s children and it seems so daunting or even impossible….Well, may I just say it doesn’t have to be that way! Kelly lays it out step by step so perfectly in her book, she makes it feel achievable by putting it in real-life every day version. This is a must read book!

“Basically, the spiritual concept of throwing off scratchy wool for designer silk sounds simply effortless, but the real-life version is another matter altogether. Many of us who have attempted such a wardrobe overhaul have come up frustrated rather than inspired, and this for many reasons we will address in the pages to come. I hope to speak to these struggles while looking at specific character qualities less from an academic view and more from the vantage point of our everyday realities. Because most of us know we’re supposed to take off old things like bitterness and anger and full-on recklessness and put on the new self, which is full of qualities such as kindness and joy and self-control. But knowing this doesn’t automatically make it so.” (from page 17 of book)

If God Should Choose, by Kristen Stagg

Recommended for 12 years old and up. Book review by Rebecca Walter.

“Intensely Personal. Tragic. And yet uplifting. Told skillfully by mission colleague Kristen Stagg, this is the authorized account of what happened, including how the Bowers came to the rain forest of Peru in the first place. It is a tale of life-and death. For not all of the passengers lived to tell the story. As you read the story of these missionaries who were faithful when facing death and overwhelming grief, you’ll see how God can use personal tragedy to bring the message of His love to a watching world.” (from the inside front cover of book)

Jim and Veronica “Roni” Bowers their young son, Cory, and infant daughter, Charity, (whom they had just adopted) were flying back to Iquitos with pilot and co-worker Kevin Donaldson.
This small group of friends had flown the day before to the border Peru shares with Brazil to conduct business. It would be a short easy trip to get a permanent resident visa for Charity their new little daughter.

But when they were less than an hour from home and lunch, tragedy struck the single-engine Cessna floatplane in which they traveled. Bullets from a Peruvian air force jet slammed into the missionaries’ plane forever leaving April 20, 2001 as a tragic day.

You’ll have to read the book to find out what happened. It’s well worth your time!! I give it a five star rating. It’s an amazing story of how God can work through our lives!

Girl Defined, by Kristen Clark and Bethany Baird

Recommended for 13 years old and up. This is a great book for young women to understand Biblical womanhood and true beauty! Book review by Taylor Brown.

The book Girl Defined is most certainly a ten out of ten in my eyes for three main reasons: 1. It teaches true beauty through God’s Word. 2. It is encouraging. 3. It is written by women who understand how false beauty can be destructive. These three things are needed to truly understand why the world’s ideals for beauty are over-rated and more destructive than uplifting for girls of all ages. As a teen girl who has struggled with what true beauty is, this book was a push in the right direction for finding what true biblical beauty is.

Chapter Two, “The Blonde Bombshells Don’t Have What it Takes” was the most eye opening for myself. It takes you into the life of a young woman who the world adored but she herself did not. This chapter not only showed the destructiveness of the world’s idea for beauty but gave us a way to counteract false beauty with God’s idea for it. The constant world views of beauty that are ever changing and unreliable. They couldn’t even be upheld by what the world itself called the most beautiful women. There was no fulfillment for the soul in world beauty but there is in God’s idea for beauty. This chapter was just one of the many inspiring chapters for how much more God’s beauty is worth than the world’s.

This book was well written and is definitely a needed read for anyone who is trying to find true beauty!

Beautiful Lies, by Jennifer Strickland

Recommended for 16 years old and up. (If younger I would have the Mom read it first to see if her daughter would be ready for a book like this. She shares in detail a lot about her modeling career.) Book review by Rebecca Walter.

Jennifer, a former professional model shares in her book “Beautiful Lies” how looking for worth and approval from the wrong things can ruin your life. She also shares where true worth, acceptance and love can be found!

The cameras were on her. She was successful in her modeling career. She was on magazine covers and doing commercials. Everyone looking in thought she had it all put together. No one saw behind the cameras, where you’re treated as a plastic mannequin not a beautiful creation. This left her broken and lost.

“My spirit began clanking it’s empty cup on the prison cell of my body and I began to turn against my own self. Binging one day and starving the next, I would stay in my bed for long hours while voices ripped at my self-worth, blasting messages through my brain. I wasn’t good enough, beautiful enough, perfect enough. No one loved me, no one saw me, no one knew me, there was no way out.” (from page 30 of book)

After a failed attempt to end her life, something happened that changed her life… she was given the Word of God, The Bible! “In the pages of that Word, I discover a man who accepts me just as I am. A man who offers me freedom from the slavery of my life. A king who will never leave me or forsake me.” (from page 34 of book)

Adorned, by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

♥ Recommended for 13 years old and up. Mama favorite! For women of ALL AGES and Stages!

We’ve all heard that mentorship is important, but what does that actually look like? For an older women? For a younger woman? In this amazing book, Nancy shares about adorning ourselves as women of Jesus and how that will spill over onto the next generation. This is a detailed study in Titus 2, breaking apart each verse and exploring how we can live it out in our daily lives in our current situations. With personal examples from both her life as a single woman and now as a married woman, you’ll see what mentorship can look like in various stages of life.

“Woman to woman. Older to younger. Side by side. Life on life. This is God’s good and beautiful plan.” (from page 20)

“The women around you, overwhelmed by the undertow of life but longing to be beautiful—adorned—need more than a book to read or a class to attend or more worship music to play. They need you.” (from page 342)

Whether you’re a mom, a grandma, or a single gal, this book has a message that you need to hear. The next generation needs you! A must read for women of all ages and stages!

This isn’t just a book you sit there and read. It requires action. It makes you want to get on your knees right then and there to fight the real battle. One— Impossible Starts Here, by Suzanne Mayernick and Gwen Oatsvall

♥ Recommended for 13 years old and up. Mama favorite! Book review by Rebecca Walter.

This book will inspire you to start again right where you are! To say YES to the opportunity to love ONE! The one whom God has called you to right now in this season of your life.

“And if you find yourself stuck somewhere between fear and inferiority, between doubt and disillusionment, tired of bare spiritual minimums but unable to spot a path that takes you to anything more meaningful, the simplicity of this message could finally reveal how God can work through your ordinary self and your uncertain steps of surrender to make His presence overwhelmingly know in your life.” (from back cover of the book)

In this book, Suzanne and Gwen share with you about the adoptions of their own precious children and their ministry organization 147 Million Orphans.  They also share how it is possible to say YES, taking a step of obedience into the unknown and have a joy filled life in the midst of pain and struggles.

Let’s All Be Brave, by Annie F. Downs

♥ Recommended for 13 years old and up…mamas and grandmas included!

What is funny and serious and challenging and hilarious all at the same time? Annie Downs and her book “Let’s All Be Brave”, that’s what! In this very personal narrative on being courageous, you’ll hear stories and testimonies of what it looks like to live brave in different seasons and situations of life.

“…It’s your map. Not my map. Or my cousin’s map. Or your spouse’s map. It’s yours. And there is something so sweet about God doing life that way. Giving you your own rivers to cross and mountains to climb and forks in the roads of your life that I will never come to. You get to be brave right there, in each of those places. Bravery begets bravery. If you’ll be brave, I’ll be brave. And when I am brave, you feel like you can be too.” (from page 19)

Sometimes we get this idea that being brave means something dangerous like moving to Africa where they have unsafe water or jumping out of a plane with a parachute…but what if God calls us all to be brave? In different ways and in different spaces…but brave just the same. What if we were each MADE to live bigger than ourselves and were created to live fuller and braver and freer? We are made to need a God who replaces all our fears with faith and sends us to heights we never dreamed possible. So let’s ALL be brave!

Restless, by Jennie Allen

♥ Recommended for 13 years old and up. Mama favorite! (Note: this may be harder for younger teens to grasp… only because it targets life calling and other deeper topics. But it’s certainly doable for the determined teen!)

What are the threads of your life that God has given you that point to your calling? In this book, Jennie Allen shares that some of our seemingly unrelated life stories and relationships and heart-tuggings point to an over-reaching plan. His plan. Maybe you’ve had a dream to do something for Jesus, but it seems random or out of place. Restless speaks truth from the Word about how our stories, life experiences and even suffering can connect the dots.

“A lot of us, if we’re honest, are afraid. We hold our dreams close to our chest. But our passions have a purpose—they were engineered for God’s greater plan and he intends for us to use them for his glory and purposes.” (from back of the book)

This is a honest, heart-to-heart with a woman who believes God is purposeful and creative in His design of YOU. Two thumbs up!

She Reads Truth, by Raechel Myers and Amanda Bible Williams

♥ Recommended for 13 years old and up. Mama favorite!

The “she” in the story? She is you. She is YOU. And the Hero of the story? Jesus. He is the Truth we’ve all been aching for. His Word is the Truth that anchors our souls.

Amanda and Raechel have a beautiful way of writing their life stories—full of real heartache and times of pain—in a way that will consistently point you to Jesus. For HE is the Truth we are seeking. His Word is Truth.  In a world of death, broken promises, and hardship…what can we count on to not shift beneath our feet? Is there anything we can hold onto? The subtitle says it well…”Holding tight to Permanent in a world that’s passing away”. Raechel and Amanda have very different life stories, but they discovered that Jesus and His Word are the Permanent their hearts craved for so long. They have launched a huge community of Truth-readers that spans the world over. You can check them out at www.shereadstruth.com

“She wants to know what is true—not partly true, or sometimes true, or almost true. SHe wants to see truth itself, face-to-face…Sometimes it takes everything moving to notice the thing that doesn’t move. Sometimes it takes telling two very different stories to notice the Truth was exactly the same in both of them.” (from back cover of the book)

Open Your Bible, by Raechel Myers and Amanda Bible Williams

♥ Recommended for 13 years old and up…mamas and grandmas included! We’ve done this study with teen girls all the way up to 50’s…and all of them LOVED it.

We’ve done a lot of Bibles studies over the last three-plus years here at PCM, and this is at the top of our list! If you’re looking for a good place to start with a group of new believers or a handful of steeped-in-the-Bible gals, this study will challenge them all!

The theme for this study is to Open Your Bible…literally. Through the Word it answers questions like: Why do we open our Bibles? What has kept you from opening your Bible? How often should I read the Bible? How can I get into the Word regularly? As Raechel and Amanda say so well on page 5…”The Bible is for you and for now. But it is not about you—it is about God! It is about His steadfast love for His people. It is about His sovereign plan, His grace, His glory, and you are meant to read it.”

This study can be used with short videos where Raechel and Amanda talk about each week’s big idea and launch you into your group discussion and weekly homework. You can watch the promo video here. If you are looking for a fabulous Bible study…look no further…this 7-session study is for you!

Hiding in the Light, by Rifqa Bary

♥ Recommended for 13 years old and up. This book is fabulous for helping young people evaluate their faith and what they are willing to risk for Jesus. (Note: there are some sensitive parts of this story, but they are explained with discretion.)

The subtitle says it all: “Why I risked everything to leave Islam and follow Jesus.” This book will make you think. It will challenge your faith. It will inspire you to see Jesus with new eyes.

Hiding in the Light is a book about a teenage girl, living in America, in the 21st century who made a bold decision for Christ. “Rifqua grew up in a devout Muslim home, obediently following the rituals of Islam. But God was calling her to freedom and love. He was calling her to true faith. He was calling her to give up everything. Leaving Islam for Christianity cost her more than she imagined, but gave more than she could have dreamed. Hiding in the Light is the story of Rifqa’s remarkable spiritual journey from Islam to Christianity. Most of all, it is the story of a young girl who made life-changing sacrifices to follow Jesus—and who inspires us to do the same.” (from back cover of book)

You won’t be able to put this book down…and it just might shake your world.

Jennie Allen is a passionate speaker and writer. Her love for Jesus has sent her on a journey of reckless abandon to Him. But it wasn’t always so. In this book you will follow Jennie as she discovers “the prayer that unlocked my God and my soul”. You won’t want to miss out on this adventure.

Have you ever prayed “Anything. I’ll do ANYTHING you ask of me, Jesus”? It’s a daring prayer. Scary. Brave. And yet, isn’t it the wisest thing to ask in light of eternity?

“Anything is a prayer of surrender that will spark something. A prayer that will move us to stop chasing things that just make us feel happy and star living a life that matters. A life that is…surrendered, reckless, courageous. If we truly know a God worth giving anything for, everything changes.” (from back cover)

So Long Insecurity, by Beth Moore

♥Recommended for Ages 15 and up. A Mama favorite! This book is a fabulous book for older girls and mamas. It is written for adult women, but younger women would certainly benefit from the message found in these pages. Wonderful truths!

One of the biggest battles for women is insecurity. Beth Moore knows this and she has tackled this topic bravely. In her typical candid fashion, Beth highlights the lies behind insecurity and the truth that will set us free. With real life examples, hilarious scenarios, Scriptural principles and tough, truth-talking…this will be a book that blesses you.

“We all have insecurities….the question is whether or not our insecurities are substantial enough to hurt, limit, or even distract us from profound effectiveness or fulfillment of purpose. Are they cheating us of the powerful and abundant life Jesus flagrantly promised?…Scripture claims that believers in Christ are enormously gifted people. Are our insecurities snuffing out the Spirit until our gifts, for all practical purposes, are largely unproductive or, at the very least, tentative?…I’m convinced that many women—if not most—have enough insecurity to hinder them.” (Taken from pages 15-16 of So Long Insecurity).

From beauty and sibling rivalry to career status and popularity, we know what’s it’s like to feel insecure at almost every age level. Some people flash their success and boast that they never struggle, are hyper-spiritual, or come across like they have it all together…whenever that happens you can be sure that person is insecure. Or maybe you have another friend who is always dumbing herself down with phrases like “I could never do that” or “I’m really not that good”….or she can never honestly and sweetly receive a simple compliment. Thats insecurity too.

So for all women, young and old alike, needing to say goodbye to insecurity, this book is a great encouragement…ultimately leading you to the only One who can make you complete and secure…Jesus. And yes, friend…that means you. Jesus wants you secure in Him.

One Thousand Gifts, by Ann Voskamp

♥Recommended for Girls 13 and up! A mama’s favorite! (Note: this book has many versions including a journal, 5-week Bible study, and photo-gift addition that is simpler and shorter. All of them are wonderful. The top book in the photo above is the original version and the bottom one is the gift addition.)

Joy. Grace. Thankfulness. Gratitude. These words all connect in this beautiful book. This is the story of a woman embarking on a journey to find hope and joy in the daily grind, in the hard moments, in the broken times. Her journey started with a dare to name one thousand gifts. One thousand things that God had blessed her with. Thanking God for everything…even the hard things. What happened as a result of this gratitude list was more than pages full of writing…it was a changed woman….who then shares her change with us.

“Begin to wake to the wonder of the small. Begin to find joy in what really matters. Begin to change your one wild life. Begin by turning these pages of my story of change, my own story of counting, my story of finding God in the moments–and begin your own story of change and finding the grace of God everywhere. Begin counting the gifts, counting all the ways He loves, counting a thousand, more, never stopping…Receiving each moment for what it really is: holy, ordinary, amazing grace. A gift.” (taken from the introduction of the selection book)

Rhinestone Jesus, by Kristen Welch

♥Recommended for Ages 18 and up. A Mama favorite! (Note: this book is a fabulous book for graduates and mamas. It is written for adult women, so it does have some adult themes that younger girls or even teens may need help processing. We encourage this book…but proceed with caution when dealing with younger gals.)

Sometimes living the Christian life is easier if we wear it like a sparkly pin…it doesn’t change our world or rock our normality that way. Kristen Welch knew how to wear the Jesus pin, but she has now learned to follow Him in a much bigger, more uncomfortable way. Her candid honesty is raw and beautiful. She admits where she used to be and encourages others to be a follower of Jesus, instead of just a cheerleader on the sidelines.

“Yes, this is my story of a discarded dream that was restored…I spent my first thirty-seven years wearing my sparkly, pinned-on faith and trying to fit Jesus into my life. It wasn’t until I started fitting my life into Jesus that my faith became enough. Saying yes to Him has led me on an unbelievable journey. So…
if you have a dream
if you have stopped dreaming
if you need more time
if you have too much time
if you want to slow down life
if you want to speed it up for better days
if you long for a family dinner together
if you long for a moment to yourself
if you want your kids to recognize the needs of others
if you believe God has a purpose for your life
if you want your life to count
if you want what you do to matter
…this book is for you.” (taken from Introduction)

Travel with Kristen through heartache and joy as she discovers what it means to be completely sold out to Jesus. And who knew that meant Kenya, Africa?

Before You Meet Prince Charming, by Sarah Mally

♥Recommended for Girls 10 and up! (Note: this book is designed to speak to younger gals about purity. It is very careful to approach the subject with honesty from the Word of God, but not to use details that girls from sheltered and protective homes would be unfamiliar with. Sarah does a great job of speaking to a young, conservative girls about an important subject! This would be a great book to read as a mother/daughter pair!)

What girl doesn’t love a dreamy fairy tale, right? Well, here you are gals! This book about radiant purity is both instructive and a fun fairy-tale story-line! Follow a sixteen-year-old princess through her kingdom and life as she learns some valuable lessons about being a young woman of virtue. Meet some dragons, giants, and plenty of knights along the way, as this brave princess rides her horse Victory. Each chapter has part of the story line while the next half is full of Scriptures, testimonies, and illustrations.

“If your single years are spent simply waiting around for Prince Charming, feeling sorry for yourself, and dreaming of being married, your life will be miserable. But if your days are spent serving the Lord, each day will only get sweeter as you abide in His presence, more joyous as you see His plans unfold, and more fulfilling as you learn that it is more blesse to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35)”

In this book, Sarah Mally uncovers the keys to not just purity in body…but in soul and spirit, and what to spend your time on in the meantime! Sarah Mally has written this book on such a sensitive topic very well. It has really helped many girls understand the importance of guarding their hearts with diligence. In a world warring against Godly, radiant purity…This book is interesting, fun, Scriptural, and appropriate for younger gals. You’ll want to add this to your read list!

Not a Fan, by Kyle Idleman

♥Recommended for All Ages!

If you are a fan of Jesus this book is not for you. This is about being a Jesus-FOLLOWER. The vast difference between cheering for Jesus as a fan and following Jesus (which often means sacrifice!) is astounding. Jesus never tried to motivate the crowds through feel good messages…He told them the hard truth and invited them to follow. The choice was theirs. The same choice is ours.

“The dictionary defines a fan as ‘an enthusiastic admirer.’ Fans want to be close enough to Jesus to get all the benefits, but not so close that is requires sacrifice. Fans may be fine with repeating a prayer, attending church on the weekend, and slapping a Jesus fish on their bumpers. But is that really the extent of the relationship Jesus wants? …..Jesus was never interested in having admirers. It’s not fans he is looking for.” (taken from back cover of book)

In a world of ease and comfort and luxury, are we fans or followers? Kyle Idleman encourages his readers do a relationship diagnosis. Define your relationship with Jesus. With his typical humor and great analogies, Kyle will get you thinking deeper about the Word of God and the God of the Word. He weaves personal stories and testimonies of friends throughout this book, making it both engaging and challenging.

Warning: this is not a feel-good book. Prepare to be stretched. Get ready to be confronted…even cornered. This is not for the weak of heart. Not A Fan is for those who crave change and a deeper relationship with Jesus. If you don’t want those things than pick a different reading buddy. This book is meant to make you jump out of your comfort zone…and into God’s will for your life.

AHA, by Kyle Idleman

♥Recommended for All Ages!

Awakening. Honesty. Action. We all need an AHA moment…and this book is a life-changer. It helps unlock the secrets that many Christians are missing today. Delving deep into the hidden message of the Prodigal son and his Father, Kyle Idleman weaves a different narrative. One that will shake you from sitting in the pew every Sunday, to LIVING your Christianity in a radical way.

If you are unfamiliar with Kyle Idleman, he has a wonderful way with words. He will have you laughing, crying, and everything in between. Even with the seriousness of this topic, Kyle’s humor and love for life is obvious. “I love witnessing AHA. I see it almost every weekend at the church where I serve. I listen to people as they tell about the spiritual awakening they have experienced. In that moment there is a beautiful collision. At just the right time, a person’s life collides with God’s Word and the power of the Holy Spirit, and everything changes.” (taken from page 14)

Where are you in the Prodigal son story? Are you the rebellious son…far from where you know you should be? The waiting father…waiting for the return of someone you’ve been praying for? The older brother…unwilling to welcome the wayward brother home again?
This book has the potential to wreck your life. To make you stand and see others with more compassion, as your Heavenly Father. To view the dying, hurting world eyes of love versus judgement. To motivate you to extreme action. No more comfort…it’s time for an Awakening. Some Honesty. And lots of Action. Prepare to be changed, friend! Get ready for an AHA moment.

Confessions of a Boy-Crazy Girl, by Paula (Hendricks) Marsteller

♥Recommended for Girls 13+

Are you boy-crazy?

Travel anywhere and there is a common denominator among young ladies…an interest in boys. Getting their attention becomes a quest for many girls, much to their hurt later. Paula has beautifully written this little book to address this topic. With her humor, love for the Word of God, and the stories from her own life, she talks honestly about guy-girl relationships. Dating, heart-breaks, purity, and true love are subjects that Paula candidly speaks through with a heart of kindness.

“I was ten when I first wrote about a boy in my journal. It didn’t seem to matter that his last name was Roach, or that he came in and out of my life one short afternoon. He wasn’t the first boy I noticed—or the last. Over the years, my ‘cute, innocent crushes’ became more and more frequent—and more and more costly.” (from the back cover of the book)

If you’ve ever met Paula, you’ll know that her heart for young ladies like YOU is deeper than just a book she wrote. The lessons and hard-knocks spelled out in this are deeply etched in her life and she longs to share her wisdom and experience so you avoid heartache. You will be sure to find a forever friend in Paula through the pages of this book…and find a deeper love for the God she serves!

Secret Keeper, by Dannah Gresh     The Delicate Power of Modesty

♥Recommended for All Ages! (Note: This is a GIRLS ONLY book, not at all recommended for brothers to read. There may be some sensitive material that younger girls may need their moms to help process. A great idea for a mom/daughter discussion!)

Let’s face it girls…Modesty is a tough issue nowadays. Actually, it’s a VERY TOUGH issue. Dannah Gresh has a lovely balance. She presents the truth of Scripture in a way that is both unforgettable and much needed. She uses illustrations, the history of clothes, and a knowledge of today’s current issues to weave a careful understanding of modesty. First, she addresses the heart of this topic and then moves to giving practical examples of how to reinvent your wardrobe to be God-honoring and still cute. With her typical straight-forwardness and humor, she weaves an urgency for girls to stand up in brave femininity, dignity, and grace.

In this fun, engaging book you will find questions and answers about allure, true beauty, and the power of a modest girl, plus fun fashion tests to evaluate your clothing…can you say “Raise and Praise”?

“Modesty is Power! In this age of low-rise jeans, belly-button rings, and backless shirts, do you ask yourself these questions?… Why can’t I wear what everyone else is wearing? Times have changed, why can’t I? Isn’t it really the guy’s problem if he’s tempted?” (from back cover of the book)

If you haven’t read this short, but informative 95-page book, girls, you will want to!

Wherever the River Runs, by Kelly Minter

How a forgotten people renewed my hope in the Gospel.

♥Recommended for All Ages!

Kelly Minter is one of those rare people who writes like she is your best friend…sitting next to you and telling her story with a cup of coffee in hand. In reading this book, you will come away feeling like you have traveled to the Amazon WITH her. She carefully weaves her love of Jesus and the Word of God in this amazing chronicle of her journey along the longest river on earth…and the Brazilian people who won her heart. This story will have you jumping up and down for joy; crying for the hurting; and laughing at Kelly’s personal tales.

“I returned home from the jungle with more of an urgency, a deeper sense of what it means to steward this brief hour we call life. It was Jesus who said that we are to do His work while it is still day, and as long as I have breath, I want to make the daylight count, whether at home or in the Amazon. I think our tendency is to believe that God is inviting someone else into the ministry of reconciliation, tapping someone a little more gifted or holy than us for the work, sending the person to the jungle who feels particularly poised for a riverboat trip down the longest river in the world; someone who thinks maggots in the pineapple are tasty. But the reality is that God has called every one of His children to the poor, the outcast, those on the fringes of society, the spiritually hungry. Hardly ever do we feel ready, comfortable with the task, confident in our goodness, or have any idea where the river may run, but—such a sobering wonder—He has called us still.”

This is a personal account of Kelly’s trips to Brazil and the ministry that was born: Justice and Mercy Amazon. It’s a thrilling account that will keep you on your toes and make you want to climb aboard the Discovery and travel the Amazon River with Kelly! This book will strengthen your faith and encourage you to trust JESUS in a deeper way. This will become your next favorite book!

Kisses from Katie, by Katie Davis Majors

A story of relentless love and redemption.

♥Recommended for All Ages!

This is a book you won’t want to put down. It is one of those stories that will inspire you to greater heights with JESUS, spur you on to do more for Him, and challenge your faith. It will push you outside your comfort zone and leave you forever changed. You’ll want to read it again and again!

This story is personal. It’s the nitty-gritty of Katie’s life and ministry and how an ordinary girl has said YES to God and done extraordinary things because of her obedience. Katie made a choice to leave everything familiar and go to Uganda to serve. Her story is one of baby steps of faith…one at a time…and what has since transpired in her life will inspire you to say YES to God in new ways.

“I never meant to be a mother. I mean, I guess I did; not right now though. Not before I was married….I never meant to live in Uganda, a dot on the map in East Africa, on the opposite side of the planet from my family and all that is comfortable and familiar….

“You see, Jesus wrecked my life. For as long as I could remember, I had everything this world says is important. In high school, I was class president, homecoming queen, top of my class. I dated cute boys, and wore cute shoes and drove a cute sports car. I had wonderful, supportive parents who so desired my success that they would have paid for me to go to college anywhere my heart desires. But I loved Jesus.

“And the fact that I loved Jesus was beginning to interfere with the plans I once had for my life…”

In this gripping life story, Katie shares from her heart about being in her late teens, her choices, her struggles, and what God has done as she has given her life fully to Him. This is a book you will want to read in one sitting…it will make you laugh and cry and cheer for our amazing JESUS!

Get Lost, by Dannah Gresh     Your guide to finding true love.

♥Recommended for Graduate Girls! (Note: this is a fabulous book about singleness…younger girls will probably not get some of the concepts explained, so we recommend it for older gals.)

“Discover how to get so lost in God that a guy has to seek HIM to find you.” This first statement on the back of this book is sure to get your attention. But this isn’t just for girls struggling with singleness…this is a journey to discover your One True Love…and just how much He has sacrificed to win your heart. It’s about your soul’s craving, and how to righteously fill it.

“This book is about God…and guys…and how we get them mixed up.

“Oh do we ever.

“It shows up in the little things: picking the short skirt, racing to update a relationship status on Facebook, filling a journal with guy-talk instead of God-talk, texting under the pillow at night, jumping from guy to guy, taking the ‘walk of shame’…again, or bailing out on friends when a guy calls. As you think about similar choices in your own life and what they suggest about the priorities of your heart, you may have an intuition that I’m right. Your spirit gets it, if your mind does not.”

In her typical straight-forward way, Dannah gets to the point and talks to girls about their love life and how they view the God who has redeemed them. This book also includes a ten-day Love Feast challenge which is all about focusing on Jesus’ love for ten days and really immersing yourself in Him, His Word, and His things. Beautifully designed to keep your attention through stories, life experiences, Scripture, and illustrations…you won’t look at JESUS the same after reading this book.

“Growing Up Duggar” by Jana, Jill, Jessa and Jinger Duggar

♥Recommended for All Ages!

The Duggar girls (Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger) have recently published a
book called “Growing Up Duggar” and it targets the area of relationships.
From your relationship with your parents and siblings, to guys and
friends…this book is an encouraging and challenging read. Each chapter
targets a certain relationship and outlines through Scripture and personal
experience how God wants us to live our lives with others. You will find
plenty of humor, personal stories and pictures from these gals and
practical application to everyday life.

“You’ve looked at that girl in the mirror all your life and had made
friends with her, and then one day you look at her and notice the blemish
on her forehead or the nose that isn’t as cute as your friend’s nose. Maybe
the girl who seemed just fine yesterday now seems too short or too tall,
too thin or too heavy. Maybe her clothes, the ones that were your favorites
yesterday, seem completely wrong today! And that hair! It’s ridiculous!”

“…It’s typical of teenagers, especially young ladies. It’s easy for us to
compare ourselves to others and think we have to be like them to measure up
or to be accepted…ultimately, we lose sight of what’s most important: our
inward character.” (exerpts from pages 3 and 5)

Chapter titles include: Your Relationship with Yourself; Your Relationship
with Your Parents; Your Relationship with Your Siblings; Your Relationship
with Your Friends; Your Relationship with Guys; Your Relationship with
Culture; Your Relationship with Your country; and Your Relationship with

“Do Hard Things” by Alex and Brett Harris

♥Recommended for All Ages!

If you want a really great book to read…written for young people by young
people… Alex and Brett Harris have the perfect book for you! “Do Hard
Things” is a wonderful book that will challenge you to make the most of
your youth for Jesus’ sake. The title says it all! Twin brothers, Alex and
Brett wrote this book when they were 19 years old and had already
accomplished some pretty amazing things. You will hear their story, along
with the stories of several other culture-defying teens who have stood up
and said “yes” to the call of God on their lives.

Our culture expects little to nothing out of young people…but Jesus
expects maturity. He asks for faithful young men and young women who will
carry the Cross in their youth and make a difference for Him. This book
will challenge you to do just that! It is encouaraging, uplifting, and
helpful…giving you “handles” for your walk of faith and ideas to take
that first step. This book is about rethinking your teen years in light of
Scripture. Alex and Brett write this:

“Most people don’t expect you to understand what we’re going to tell you in
this book. And even if you do understand, they don’t expect you to care.
And even if you care, they don’t expect you to do anything about it. And
even if you do something about it, they don’t expect it to last.

“Well, we do.

“This is a different kind of teen book…a challenging book for teens by
teens who believe our generation is ready for change. Ready for something
that doesn’t promise a whole new life if you’ll just buy the right pair of
jeans and the right kind of deodorant. We believe our generation is ready
to rethink what teens are capable of doing and becoming. And we’ve noticed
that once the wrong ideas are debunked and cleared away, our generation is
quick to choose a better way, even if it’s also more than difficult.”

“Girls With Swords” By Lisa Bevere

♥Recommended for All Ages! (A mama favorite!)

When it comes to spiritual warfare and silencing the enemy, we need to
understand the weapons that God has given each of us to be victorious! Lisa
Bevere has written a wonderful book here. It is written by a woman for
women and illustrates beautifully “how to carry your Cross like a hero”.
The Word of God is our chief weapon and learning to use it wisely is key to
our spiritual success. Lisa talks straight forward about the battles we
face as women in our culture and the targets we are to the enemy. She also
unveils the truth of God’s Word and the importance of standing firm against
the devil. We are targets, but we can choose to be heroes!

“I want you to know the weight of your moment in history. As a daughter of
this age, you are a target. The hero factor is your choice. If you fail to
see this for what it is, you will take these attacks against your gender
and faith personally and therefore respond on a personal level. But this is
way bigger than any one of us. There is no way you can or should fight this
battle on your own. This conflict will require heavenly strategy and
support…..the goal of this book is to see you armed and empowered,
because as we grow in strength, our God Most High rises up against the
enemy.” (from pages 9 and 15)

“You’re Already Amazing” by Holley Gerth

♥Recommended for Girls 13+ (A mama favorite!)

Don’t you just love a good book? I have to admit to you, when I started
reading Holley Gerth’s book, “You’re Already Amazing”, I was a little
skeptical. I don’t even really know why. Maybe I half expected some kind of
warm and fuzzy book that would make me think I never needed to grow.
Anyway, I wasn’t prepared for the encouragement that would come my way from
these pages. So naturally, I wanted to share it with you!

The subtitle really says it all… “Embracing Who You Are, Becoming All God
Created You to Be”. I like that. It seems that we often go to one extreme
or the other. We are way too comfortable with where we are in life…so we
don’t seem in a hurry to change or grow up. OR we are always beating
ourselves down about how horrible we are that we can’t see what God sees…
a beautiful daughter of the King! This book is sure to encourage you to
accept the way God has designed you and be balanced in the way you view
yourself.

You were created beautiful and unique. Your talents, your dreams, your hair
and eyes…each of these were hand picked just for you. Yes, we all need to
be constantly conformed to His image, but we also need to realize that
nothing we can do (whether it is outward beauty or acts of service) will
make God love us anymore. He already loves you beautifully, fully, and
unconditionally… and because of that love we should WANT to change to be
all He intends for us. He sees you as ALREADY AMAZING!
“Psst…pull up a chair and I’ll tell you a secret. You’d better lean in
close for this one. Ready? You don’t have to do more, be more, have
more….it’s true. It’s the kind of true that will change your life, set
you free, and make you wake up smiling for the first time in a long time. I
know because that’s what it did for me.” (Holley Gerth in “You’re Already
Amazing”)
